Addressed to the European Commission
On May 10, 2026, 426 Members of the European Parliament voted to warn against plant-based food in schools, cut funding for NGOs advocating sustainable diets, and commission new "scientific studies" authored, in effect, by the very industry under scrutiny. Seventy-three percent of the Parliament. A supermajority. In service of an industry, not a people.
This did not come from nowhere. For years, the meat and dairy lobby has worked quietly and methodically inside EU institutions, funding research, cultivating relationships, and shaping legislation to protect its market at any cost. The October 2025 vote to ban terms like "veggie burger" and "plant-based steak" from product labels was another move in the same game. Not consumer protection. Market protection.
And now they are going after children. They know that schools are where food cultures are formed. They know that a generation raised with plant-based options on their plates is a generation they cannot control. So they are acting, fast and deliberately, to ensure that doesn't happen.
Industrial animal agriculture is one of the leading drivers of climate breakdown, responsible for up to 18% of global greenhouse gas emissions. It is the single largest driver of biodiversity loss, clearing forests, poisoning waterways, collapsing ecosystems built over millions of years. It fuels a form of food neo-colonialism, swallowing land across the Global South to grow feed crops that sustain European consumption habits while displacing the communities who lived there.
And at the centre of it all: animals. Billions of them. Sentient beings capable of fear, pain, and attachment, confined in systems designed to extract maximum output at minimum cost. Their suffering is not incidental to this industry. It is the industry. The lobby does not just oppose plant-based food. It defends a model that depends on keeping that suffering invisible.
This is what 426 MEPs voted to protect.
Europe was built on the promise of democracy, science, and shared values. The food system we leave to the next generation, and the billions of animals caught inside it, will be a measure of whether we kept that promise.
